BECK' S PRIZE

design a key and what it opens

title: the key to the 21st century

designer's own words:
A key to the 21st century is a key concerned with major issues of the new millenium.
A key that unlocks common demoninators and discovers
something precious. Some would argue this key is information, others would look to
environmental issues and then there's war and politics. All of these factors
are affected by, or rely on the West's obsession with energy. In this sense the key
to the 20th century was oil, but we all know we must move on to something
better, something more precious, HYDROGEN. Hydrogen is the precious element that is
all around us, and one day will be powering our lifestyles, with only water as a by-product.

The lock and key to the 21st century is the process to harness this element. A simple process
of passing electric current through water creates hydrogen, which can then be stored or transported.

This process is explained metaphorically by using familiar objects, the domestic electricity
socket and the specially shaped water bottle. These two objects are
the lock and key to the 21st century. A bad lesson in household safety, but a memorable look at a topical issue.
