BECK' S PRIZE

design a key and what it opens

---
title: corn relief
# : 222
michael fung from australia

designer's own words:
The “key” to a good chair is a good backrest.

As a child growing up in a low income family, canned food …… actually any food was a luxury…… . . .
... except the salty, rubbery and fatty tinned ham or corned beef that was served, as we sat at the dinner,
table every week. The concept of this chair was inspired by the thought that the tinned meat could be put
to better use than to be consumed. It could be used as a seat.

This chair shell is consists 2 acrylic extrusions and the seat of high-density foam resting on
a cast acrylic base. The key-shaped bent recycled aluminium tube backrest “locks” the shells together.
