portraying social issues
in a bid to scratch beneath the surface of brazilian culture,
nando costa invited some of its leading designers and artists
to comment visually on their country. in contrast to the 2003
publication 'brazil inspired' the book moves away from the
colorful and decorative styles that one might associate with
the country. instead the book's inside content is printed entirely
in black and white to reflect the violence, hardship and national
tensions that range from bureaucracy to large scale political
corruption. the ultimate satirical stroke comes from nando himself
who sugar-coats the book with a vivid and energetic cover,
as many media outlets do so with brazil.

content
the work is extremely varied in its styles and stance,
it coming from both established designers and unknown equally.
some of the artists featured are carlos bêla, colletivo design,
stephan doitschinoff. although not all of the contributors are
natives of brazil, they are considered to have a a knowledge
'significant enough for them to deeply understand its culture'.
being printed in the way that it is, works in delivering its message
but some work featured seems lost amongst the bolder styles.

the views and opinions voiced by the artists proves interesting
for readers unfamiliar with the contemporary issues in brazil.
along with nando costa's brazil inspired project the book helps in
bringing the work of brazil to a global audience, and so the
project seems worth while in delivering the authors intentions:

‘creating work that 'change(s) perceptions and perhaps
spark(s) a creative movement.' nando costa.

is it for me?
whilst the book is ultimately for graphic design and
contemporary-illustration fans, its basis should appeal
to anyone who is interested
in brazilian culture and global issues.
