not made by hand, not made in china
an exhibition by ron arad

at the gallery giò marconi, milan/italy, april 2000
objects produced in conjunction with the gallery mourmans, maastricht/netherland

'...until now there were only four ways of making things - the process of making any object could be analyzed
in one or more of the following : waste (chip, carve, turn, mill, chisel - the removal of excess material);
mould (injection moulding, casting, blow-moulding - pouring material as a liquid to take the form of a vessel
and then hardening); form (bending, pressing, hammering, folding,vacuum forming - flat material forced into a
shape) and assemble (welding, gluing, bolting - joining parts together).
now, here's a fifth way grow!
all the objects in this collection were grown in a tank by computer controlled laser beams.'

this is what the team which worked on the theme (ron arad, geoff crowther, yuki tango, elliott howes at
ron arad associates) has spent a year developing, testing the limits of the technologies involved.
all objects in the not made by hand, not made in china collection are produced in small limited editions
and are considered works of art (even the price is virtuous).
