| zaha hadid: z.scape milan, april 2000 sawaya-moroni presented an integrated programme of lounge furniture, designed by zaha hadid with caroline voet, patrick schumacher, woody yao, kris dopheide, eddy can. zaha hadids office describes the entire project with these words: "... z-scape is a compact ensemble of lounge furniture for public and private living rooms. the formal concept is derived from dynamic landscape formations like glaciers and erosions. the different pieces are fragments created by overall mass and the diagonal veins. along these veins the block splits, offering large splinters for further erosive sculpting. four pieces have emerged so far: stalactite, stalagmite, glacier and moraine. others are yet to be unearthed. the pieces thus derived are then further shaped -rather losely- by typological, functional and ergonomic considerations. but these further determinations are secondary and precariously dependent on the overriding formal language. we do not want to offer optimized and thus predetermined use-patterns. a margin of strangeness and indeterminacy is desired. stimulation emerges between abstraction and metaphor. within 5 m by 2.5 m, 11 different pieces are melted together into a jigsaw puzzle, wich can be opened up and recombined into other configurations. the lounge box chops off a condensed moment in a flow of interwoven soft and hard space. the soft space, moving up from the floor, is reshaped into comfortable seating elements, while the hard space always has a vertical flat surface on the top, as well as within its structure, giving rise to tables, desks, bar elements and a range of shelves. at this stage of the process, 4 pieces have been developed into real scale prototypes. glacier and moraine are a pair of sofas in monolith upholstered foam with printed fabric coverings . stalactite and stalacmite are two complementary tables, made of wood with natural or laquered finish ..." london, april 11th 2000 itinerary of the exhibition "zaha hadid z-scape @ sawaya & moroni" : 10.04. - 10.06. 2000 showroom sawaya & moroni, milan / italy - http://www.sawayamoroni.it 27.05. - 17.06. 2000 state museum of architecture, moscow / russia 22.07. - 10.09 2000 ICA institute of contemporary arts, london, uk - http://www.ica.org.uk --- three pages, ---------------------------------------------------------------
