DESIGNBOOM, in collaboration with Oakley, is looking for design #disruptors who will challenge expectations and amaze the world with their approach to design.
Do you disregard the usual creative parameters, think unconventionally and want to change the world? Then you are a design disruptor. Send an original concept that answers the brief and you could be heading to California, USA for a week of design immersion at Oakley’s home of disruption.

01 - Disruptive By Design
History is full of visionaries who have imagined the impossible, turned it into a reality and disrupted the world around them in the process. By embracing radical new visions, ideas and concepts, these #disruptors have been the originators of a new way of thinking, doing and being. They are the revolutionaries of disruptive technology and design.
But disruption isn’t limited to history. It is a necessary part of the future. Across the globe people are challenging norms and envisioning a new, superior future for us, all driven by the knowledge that the world can, and will, be made better. They seek inspiration from the most unique and unusual places. They aren’t afraid to push the boundaries. They are not defied by limits.
They are Disruptive by Design. It is a philosophy. A process. A promise. An inherent need to improve the world around us in an unexpected, innovative way.
We can all be Disruptive by Design. This competition aims to find the next generation of disruptive designers who will make the world sit up and take notice because of their innovative approaches and radical concepts.
02 - Competition Brief
Create an innovative design that will disrupt elite sports performance in a way that hasn’t been seen before.
It needs to be an idea that's more than just an adaptation of an existing approach. It needs to be something new and radical. Something that is truly Disruptive by Design.
The most disruptive ideas come from unfamiliar and unexpected places. Take inspiration from the wider world: nature, aerospace, architecture, science fiction. There should be no limits to your sources.
There are also no restrictions on the format of the design. It could be a product, a garment, a new way to use technology, a digital design, or something entirely new that responds to or enhances elite sports performance.
Prove that you have what it takes to be one of the #disruptors of the future, and you could win the opportunity to immerse yourself in the R&D culture at Oakley’s Design HQ in California, USA.
03 - Entry
When approaching your design, think about the following:
DEFINE – What are you trying to solve?
DISCOVER – From where have you drawn unique inspiration?
DISRUPT – How will you use the inspiration to disrupt the conventional?
DESIGN – What is the solution?
DEPLOY – What have you created?
These stages should be clearly illustrated in your submission, which consists of three parts:
1. A moving image video no more than 15 seconds long. Use Instagram video, Vine, Vimeo or YouTube. You must use the hashtag #disruptors when you upload your video to these platforms. You don’t have to replicate this, be surprising and exciting, but here is an example of what your video could look like:
2. Up to six static visuals. These can be individual images or design boards.
3. A 500-word (maximum) supporting statement about your design. Tell the story behind your research, your creative process and how you arrived at your final design.
Further information on the technical requirements for these submissions can be found in the Official Rules. Please read them carefully before submitting your entry as videos and photos in incorrect formats will not be accepted.
04 - Prize / Benefits
The two winning #disruptors will each earn an all expenses paid trip to One Icon, Oakley’s home of disruption in California, USA where they’ll have exclusive access to one of the world’s most innovative design companies.
The winners’ experience will include:
- One week all expenses paid trip to California, USA
- Two-day workshop at the internationally renowned Art Center College of Design in Pasadena
- Lunch with Peter Yee and Brian Takumi of the Oakley design team with the opportunity to seek tips and advice
- Portfolio review with a senior member of the Oakley design team
- Exclusive tour of the One Icon facilities
- Tour of disruption in California to include a visit to SpaceX, the revolutionary space technology company
- 3D printed prototype of the winning design
The winners and shortlisted entrants will be published in a special report on DESIGNBOOM.
05 - Judges

06 - Judging Criteria
Entries will be judged on the following:
- Is the design innovative, radical and, most importantly, disruptive?
- Does the design show a fresh, unique perspective?
- Is the presentation of the design intelligent and inspiring?
- Does this design surprise and excite?
07 - Submission(s)
PLEASE READ THE FULL OFFICIAL COMPETITION RULES BEFORE ENTERING. You will be asked to confirm your agreement of the rules as part of your entry. Entries submitted in other formats or with technical specifics other than those permitted will not be considered.
Deadline for submissions is 23:59 (GMT), August 28th, 2014. The shortlist and winners will be announced on September 11th, 2014.
08 - Intellectual Property Rights
All Works submitted will remain the exclusive property of the entrant.
by submitting Work(s) to the competition, the entrant agrees to provide Oakley with the right of first refusal to the exclusive use of the Work for commercial purposes. this option is valid for 3-months after the end of the competition. In the case that Oakley exercises the option to use the rights for commercial use (including production) on an exclusive basis and for an unlimited period, Oakley will make a private agreement with the Entrant for the transfer of intellectual property rights.
DESIGNBOOM and Oakley will have the right to use all of the Works submitted as part of the competition, and all images and video depicted therein, in any promotion or for any non-commercial purpose. By submitting a Work, the Entrant grants the Sponsor and the Producer the non-exclusive, unlimited, royalty-free, rights to publish in all media now known or hereafter discovered, and publicly display all Work for an unlimited period, and worldwide. All Entrants authorize DESIGNBOOM and Oakley to publish and exhibit all the designs (including project data submitted, and any visuals and video) - waiving compensation - at exhibitions and events and/or use them in any publications and communications that DESIGNBOOM and Oakley may deem suitable and/or necessary.
DESIGNBOOM and Oakley will credit the designer(s)'s name to properly attribute authorship of the Work and promote the author adequately. Oakley will have the right to apply minor amendments without damaging the integrity of the artwork - e.g. adding the Oakley logo and text, reframing, translating, changing colors, cutting the background or parts of it, slightly editing the video etc…
In case DESIGNBOOM and Oakley want to bring major changes to the submitted artwork for publication, DESIGNBOOM and Oakley will contact the designer(s) and inform him/her about the use to obtain the designer(s)'s consent.
