asymptote: metamorph installation

asymptote's interventions and design concepts for the
9th international biennale of architecture opening in
september of 2004 in venice, are inspired by both historic
and contemporary influences that impact this historically
loaded event and its environs.
the arsenale, in particular, has a colorful and noteworthy
history as a place once used for the manufacture of the
venetian naval sail ships from the 16th to 18th centuries
where these immense spaces were used to manufacture
kilometers of rope and sail cloth.
asymptote's complete transformation of the cordiere
emerged from producing a computer generated morphing
animation sequence derived from combining perspectival
geometry with the actions of torquing and 'stringing' the space.
from this analytic study a number of 'key-frames' were
captured and used to 'perform' the architecture utilizing
curvatures, surfaces and a number of spatial situations.
these formations became the design on which over
220 architects projects in models, drawings and video
installations are to be exhibited.
the works situated along these 'trajectories' transform the
arsenal and corderie into a modulating terrain of affiliations,
tendencies, forms and formations.
the experience of the exhibition is primarily a spatial one,
being itself an architectural work in which to move, view
and meditate on architecture.
asymptote's complete engagement in the exhibition from
installation and exhibition design to graphic identity and
catalog design ( with new york based omnivore ) provides
for a seamless experience in both the arsenale as well as
giardini and throughout the city of venice.
this back-drop to the metamorph theme, as curated by
kurt w. forster, makes explicit a number of contemporary
readings and conditions concerning the state of early
twenty first century architecture, where both affinities and
disparities come into a vivid state of flux and metamorphosis.
