barefoot in tokyo
40 pairs of shoes
exhibited in the frame of the tokyo designers block 2004
venue: UN university, shibuya-ku, tokyo

the exhibition offered a rainbow of aspirations, eccentric designs,
as well as experimentation with colors, materials and expressions.
each pair of shoes alluded to an imaginary individual who might
wear them.

the organizer’s words:’ the shoe responds to the individual's
features: bone structure, weight, way of walking, balance,
general built, wear and tear.
in addition, some people view their choice of shoe as a symbol
of their aspirations and the way they want to be perceived,
giving rise to couture level shoes.’

the shoes were designed by 18 israeli designers who range
from artists (nati shamia opher), through industrial designers
(elad klein, raviv lifshitz, safi hefez, yaacov kaufman, shai goitein)
- and to fashion designers (moti avram, shani bar, keren bet esh,
shulli goitein, nofar karov, kobi levy, galya rosenfeld, shelly satat
and elon kombor, celina shapso, yael taragan, ehud ziv av).
the visitors are invited to add their shoes to the exhibition,
creating the feeling of entering into a design sanctum.

the exhibition was curated by nirith nelson,
the jerusalem center for the visual arts (JCVA), art director;
the jerusalem foundation, art advisor.

the display units on which the shoes were placed,
were designed by tal gur.
