1905 - 2005
this exhibition illustrated the history of the pencil from its early
days until today. on show were historical pieces from the
faber castell museum in stein, germany, such as graphics,
packaging, ads and the smallest pencil in the world...
the first pencil from a.w.faber was created in 1761. only in 1898
the company got the current name faber-castell. the famous
‘castell 9000’ pencil was born in 1905, when the count alexander
von faber castell decided to give it the current hexagonal shape to
avoid that it could fall down when rolling on the desk. he also chose
the green colour, which became a company icon. the company is
still a family business to this day now eighth generation.

---
pencil sculptures
also on show were pencil sculptures by german artist kerstin schulz.
these pieces are made exclusively for faber-castell, using
thousands of sharpened ‘castell 9000’ pencils as material.

the oldest pencil
during renovation work this unusual pencil was discovered
between the roof joists of a german house dating back to the
17th century. evidently the carpenter had forgotten it there.
it is the oldest surviving example of a pencil.
