room 5
the warm glow from a small room on the far side draws
you into room 5, where the infamous 'the way things go'
is playing along side a video showing the making of the
film. 'the way things go' takes center stage on the big
screen with full sound, while the making of video plays
quietly in the back. the main film captures a giant chain
reaction using everyday objects which come to life through
loud explosions and the laws of physics. watching the
making of video demonstrates the care and precision
that went into the 48 minute full length video. the behind
the scenes trials and errors involved in the tiniest of
actions give a new context to this film's drama.

room 7
two related works fill this room decorated with elaborate
gilding and mirrored walls. 'rat and bear costumes' sit
upright in frosted black glass cases, obfuscating the costumes inside. on the screen, 'the right way' animates
these costumes through an epic journey through the
swiss alps. the lifeless costumes take on an eery feeling
next to the film, one fully expects them to come to life
at any moment. the emptiness of the room further
enhances this feeling of expectation.

room 9
at the end of the hall, five clay sculptures sit atop plinths
as part of the 'grey sculptures' series. 'bean', 'egg' and
'organ of equilibrium' take organic objects and blow
them up to surreal proportions, while 'appartamento'
shrinks down a living quarters and 'animal' imagines
a unique creature. the series foreshadows the later
clay sculptures in room 13.
