peter fischli and david weiss - 'flowers and questions' retrospective exhibiton by swiss artists........................................................................................................................
--- room 8 before entering room 9 and viewing the collection of
'grey sculptures', we are presented with 'chain',
a preview of the larger series. taking center stage are
the three light tables which make up, 'an unsettled work'.
162 transparencies are lite from below, in the format
of a light box. the images each depict overlapping
photographs previously seen in 'flowers'. the images
displayed in 'an unsettled work' are more about
contrasts than similarities, like those in 'flowers'.
snakes, clowns, cats and dinosaurs are superimposed
onto windmills, trains and sunsets to create spooky
effects.
room 14 what seems like an array of common objects is actually
a complete re-construction of reality. the objects of
'untitled' (rotterdam) are made entirely from scratch.
each piece is hand sculpted and painted.
timber, rubber boots, car batteries and a bottle of
asprin are re-created with painstaking hyper-realism.
the room calls reality into question, asking the viewer
to reflect on their own environment.
room 12 another room of tables showcases 'the sausage
photographs' and 'equilibres quiet afternoon', two series
of photographs. 'the sausage photographs' is an early
work that uses deli meats to create images from
everyday life. carpet shopping and a car crash are
only some of the subjects in this bizarre series.
'equilibres quiet afternoon' is a larger body of work
in which the artists have photographed a number of
sculptural pieces that are created from balancing
groups of household objects together in gravity defying
poses. some evoke amazement, while others provide
a laugh.
