designboom loves the boing boing blog and
mark frauenfelder’s graphics and witty texts.
we asked him to introduce himself, for the
few remaining who haven’t heard of him yet.

‘I live with my wife and two young daughters in tarzana,
california, which is a suburb of los angeles.
tarzana used to be part of edgar rice burrough's ranch,
and since I grew up reading tarzan and the barsoom books,
it's a real treat to live here.

I am a writer and an illustrator, but have no formal
training in either.
I have a degree in mechanical engineering.
but I have always loved comic books and cartoons,
so I ended up following my heart.
my favorite illustrators and cartoonists include jack kirby,
vaughn bode, gene deitch, mary blair, jim flora,
boris artzybasheff, stanislav szukalski, jim woodring,
shane glines, tim biskup.

I started a zine with my wife in 1988, called bOING bOING,
which I filled with my pen and ink illustrations.
I started using adobe illustrator in 1990 or so, and pretty
much do everything with that. I try to paint once in a while,
but I get frustrated with the absence of an ‘undo’ command.

In 1993, I designed billy idol's album cover, singles,
video box cover, and print ads for his cyberpunk album.
shortly after that I took a job at wired magazine as an editor.
it was here that I met john plunkett and barbara kuhr,
the team that designed wired.
what a fantastic introduction to the world of design.
they are the best.

I left wired in 1988 and have been freelance since then.
I've done illustrations for a bunch of books,
and I also do the occasional drawing for a new magazine
called ‘make’. I'm the editor in chief.
