presented by droog design, it is the first exhibition
of the works by this promising young talent from
sweden in the netherlands .

front makes chairs out of an explosion, a radio tuner
out of epoxy, puts one watch behind wallpaper
and gives legs to another. they even make rabbits
and snakes give up their animal ways to produce
exclusive furniture.

their work is characterised by the influence of external
factors on objects and of series of events affecting the
design process at random. one of their projects is made
with assistance of animals. rats gnawed patterns in
wallpaper, a snake squeezed a cloth hanger out of clay,
insects ate out the design of a wooden table, and a dog’s
track in snow made a shape for a ceramic vase.

‘we asked animals to help us. sure we’ll help you,
they answered. make something nice, we told them.
and so they did’.

‘story of things’ is another project by front, during which
the designers interviewed 100 people in sweden about
objects in these people’s houses.
focusing on the question: “what happens to things
when they leave a shop?’ front collected a hundred stories:
there’s a story of a napkin holder which makes crying a
positive experience, a story of a hated GSM or story
of teddy bears which were kept in a trash bag for a
long time. these stories gave front inspiration for new
designs.

the stockholm-based design group was established
in 2003 by sofia lagerkvist, charlotte von der lancken,
anna lindgren and katja sävström. after getting their
master degrees in industrial design, the four
designers made their first exhibition as ‘front’ during the
stockholm furniture fair. ever since the front members
egularly exhibit together and make much talked-about
presentations, among others at the salone del mobile
in milan, italy.
