background
furniture and interior design were largely driven by aesthetic
revivals (of the 50'ies. 60'ies, 70'ies), functional aspects
and the development of the furniture production technologies.
since two decades and mostly due to the situation of
having (too) many designers and (too) few manufacturers
in this product area, there has not been much interaction
between furniture design companies/production development
and the designers.
so, in recent years industrial designers are increasingly
interested in graphic design, visual culture and communication
processes. this has lead to the creation of furniture and
interiors that go beyond what people would describe as 'useful,
comfortable, durable'.

designers 'furnish' presents domestic territories,
furniture and other objects that highlight the current trends.
the book includes examples of inter-disciplinary work such as,
the results of architects behaving like graphic designers,
industrial designers approaching concept art...

the richly illustrated book explores the hybrid nature of
occupied spaces, where the domestic enters the realm of art.
selected pieces range from the widely published works of
international design practises such as british future systems,

dutch marcel wanders to that of lesser known young designers.
