fusion: architecture + design in japan

israel museum, jerusalem
july 31 – december 11, 2004
http://www.imj.org.il

the exhibition depicts the many faces of contemporary
japanese design, ranging from sony robots through
the domestic products of MUJI to avant-garde pieces
drawing on a wide range of fields: architecture, product
and interactive design, furniture, visual communication,
animation, fashion, and textile.
the show features the legitimacy to borrow, mix,
create, and recreate.
works by well known designers of an older generation
such as issey miyake, toyo ito, and reiko sudo are
displayed together with works by younger designers
who blur the boundaries among industrial and
graphic design, stage design and music ...
as namaiki, kosuke tsumura, tokujin yoshioka,
atelier bow-wow, MIKAN, ukawa naohiro,
hiroyuki matsukage and many more.

alongside architectural schemes, the exhibition features
a few installations:

---
namaiki

‘globular fluff suzuki beefsteak observation clipboard
negligee serfdom storehouse ribose rancid furtherance

MIKAN
exhibits ‘eleFan(t)’, a portable, inflatable
house made of cloth.
eleFan(t) is a kind of portable house made out of cloth
swollen with air. the form can be easily changed by the
combination of fabrics according to the space condition.
miniFan(t) is made out of inflated plastic structures
looking like kinds of rings, it can be assembled easily
anywhere. as this product is made from transparent
plastic sheets, it randomly reflects the light and brews
wonderful beauty. it basically recalls the shape of eleFan(t)
although it is reduced in size.
that makes it suitable for many uses like for example the
child's room of a house. just like eleFan(t) it can be combined
freely which makes it easy to respond to the changing
characteristic of a place.
