art gallery monika sprüth and philomene magers
presents a group show in occasion of the
international furniture fair ‘imm cologne’.

the furniture objects shown are created by
artists thea djordjadze, peter fischli/david weiss,
clausföttinger, thomas grünfeld, jenny holzer,
stefan kern, louise lawler, joseph kosuth,
nam june paik, michail pirgelis, michelangelo
pistoletto, thomas scheibitz, andreas schulze,
cindy sherman, rosemarie trockel and franz west.

following the central question of ‘where is the
border between art and design’, the artists have
created for functional use explicitly.
certainly today there is a bluring of the line
between ‘decoration’ and ‘art’ on objects
and our environment.

the exhibited art pieces take on shapes and
simultaneously their inherent forms of practical
use as furniture. beyond their functionality they
present spaces of different connotations and
references. the artists through their works follow
the supposed questions that possibly arise in
the interface of both - furniture and object.
the exhibits are set up inside a living situation,
grouped in several rooms such as living room,
bedroom and hall.

one room is dedicated to michelangelo pistoletto’s
‘love difference table’ shaped as the mediterranean
sea and surrounded by 23 chairs - each belonging
to a state. not only corresponding to the theme of
possible worlds (’mondi possibili’) of design and
art, there is also the question of ‘how far art can
contribute to politics of transnationalism’.
