a sliding space by tokujin yoshioka

designers create spaces but they also like to
inhabit them.
one of the cooler interiors we've seen in a
while is the renovation room, created by
japanese designer tokujin yoshioka for muji,
december 2003.

'we have completely renovated a typical
japanese apartment, common in the 80's.
the concept was to do nothing' says tokujin.

it is an open plan.
with furniture and accessories kept to
a functional minimum, the walls and architectural
detailing become of crucial importance.
sliding folding doors hide functional rooms.
every necessity space can be unvealed by just
open doors. close the kitchen and open the studio.
close it and convert the room opening up to
washing facilities...
in the absence of 'colour', light is used to create
visual interest by highlighting surface textures,
shape and creating shadows.
the use of under-ceiling light tracks reduces the
weightiness of the door-walls making the room
feel more open, larger and void of the restrictions
of space.
the material used for the floor is recycled wood,
in which old wood chips and resin are
synthesized. it is extremely durable and creates
a seamless artificial wood surface.

you couldn’t be this organized and settled,
if you had to do it yourselves!
minimalism is more than a great style of home
decorating. this look is all about control and design
success depends on your willpower not to over buy
or over fill a space.
minimalism design relies on subtraction and the
preservation of empty space.
the absence of 'stuff' is also easy on the mind,
by creating peaceful, uncluttered environments.
it's time to give yourself the interior you've
always wanted.
