| http://www.pokia.com hi designboom, as your audience seems to be concerned with design, I'll try thinking about some things that might interest them. what interests me about the pokia idea is that it brings together fashion, art and design thinking. product designers are often very future facing, always very keen to define new looks, new forms etc. whilst fashion is similarly motivated it seems that it is just as happy reinventing old styles as it is creating new ones. the art aspect for me is the thought, one which I think is similar to duchamp's urinal, in that it is a familiar object whose context has been changed, completely transforming how we perceive it. --- so what I've done with pokia is take existing things and recompose them, drawing from the past and creating something new out of it. whilst this might sound complicated the object itself and its function is actually incredibly simple which is why it's got so much attention. --- when you take design out of the hands of these huge telco organizations and actually have the chance to have some fun with the design, of course the designs are going to look fantastic and attract attention (and stop you getting brain cancer!) --- one other thing that is interesting is that so far mobile phone accessories have been quite practical and yet unusable (for most). it's a strange paradox on the surface but makes total sense when you think about it. on one hand the traditional handsfree kit makes perfect sense; it gives you your hands to do with as you choose and it takes the potentially hazardous mobile away from your head. however the great disadvantage is that it feels stupid because of behavioral conventions namely the unspoken law of thou shalt not walk down the street talking to yourself, creating the impression of a crazed schizophrenic. --- whilst impractical in other ways the pokia at least demonstrates to other people around you that you're having a conversation with someone else, not with your split personality. mobile phone companies are too concerned about streamlining functionality rather than cater to the idiosyncrasies of human behavior. --- oh and I'm making a bunch of new pokias, available at the end of the year (for details sign up at pokia.com ) --- ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? ------- |
