botijo fridge

designer's own words:

The Spanish botijo is a water bottle made of unglazed earthenware that cools the water it contains by evaporation. It is a very environmentally friendly way of cooling, which has proved to be successful during hundreds of years. Why shouldn't we try to make a refrigerator based on this principle? Then first we have to know how the botijo works.
The water is partly absorbed by the unglazed walls of the botijo. When the water reaches the surface, the water molecules with a high energy level manage to escape. In this way, the average energy level, which defines the temperature of the water, drops, and the water cools down till it reaches the dew point. In average kitchens this is at about 12? C.
12? C is quite a good temperature to store fruit, vegetables, wine etcetera. If we have a botijo fridge for these products, we only need a small fridge for meat and milk products. A smaller fridge is less energy consuming than a big one, so it would bring us one step closer towards a better environment.
Of course a double-walled ceramic fridge filled with water would be both extremely heavy as well as pretty fragile. So in order to make this work, we should decrease the size of the fridge. Therefore I designed these ceramic 'fridge tiles' that can be easily attached to a rail on the kitchen wall. I designed two different models, one for vegetables and one for wine bottles.
