designboom and DuPont's international design competition theme: DuPont Corian® for a food & coffee bar results ! -------------------------- top 30 nominations # 1161 title: circularly dug bar name : athanasios karampatsos and andreas skokos sex : male age : - city : london state : uk --- our concept is a multi layered coffee / food bar that could be applied either as an added platform to set spaces, or as a dug-out installation to new spaces. since the brief did not dictate the design of an interior space with fixed dimensions, we focused on developing an interior design concept that can be applied to various spaces. that is the reason behind the circular arrangement of our presentation. in this design proposal, bone coloured corian acts as a backlit skin, expanding onto each surface, vertical or horizontal. the design consists of 4 main areas, arranged on 4 different levels. the circularly dug bar area encloses all the rest in a way that the staff stand 120 cm lower than the entrance-walk in level. eight sitting cubicles are sunken (60 cm depth) in a round arrangement, creating 7 individual tables that can accommodate up to 42 people. the standing visitors&Mac226; area accommodates clients who want a quick drink or snack. It stands on a level of 90 cm below the entrance level. the staff area of the bar is enclosed in a curtain-like array of hanging fabric cords. this curtain creates a visual barrier without being completely opaque- in this way the staff can work behind it without being properly seen and the visitors can enjoy their privacy without feeling completely shut out. each of the 7 tabletops encloses a touch sensitive LCD screen which acts as an electronic menu. from that screen the visitor can make a selection that is then sent directly to the bar/ kitchen staff.      ---  back to the competition results index ---  ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? -------
