designboom and DuPont's international design competition theme: DuPont Corian® for a food & coffee bar results ! # 1305 title: boogaloo name : andrea ruggiero sex : male age : 33 city : new york state : usa --- the extra-long (7,60m) bar consists of six 12mm thick thermoformed corian sheets assembled on site. resembling a sleek white wing, the bar is underlit in a seemingly random circle pattern which was precision fabricated using numerically-controlled milling technolgy: cad data was e-mailed to the fabricator who then removed (by milling the underside) circa 6mm of the corian's thickness to allow for light to shine through. Initially specified because of its superior stain / burn resistance, corian was also chosen because of its translucent potential as the designer wanted to emulate the circular pattern of light thrown by a candle on a table; to capture that warmth -- the flattering soft uplight on people's faces. in addition, the profile of the bar was specifically designed to encourage 'lateral contact' : It is devoid of a typical 'lip' so as to discourage the anti-social position of forward-facing-sitting, yet remains very comfortable to lean against.   ---  back to the competition results index ---  ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? -------  |
