designboom and DuPont's international design competition theme: DuPont Corian® for a food & coffee bar results ! # 98 title: glowing interactive corian tables name : tilla goldberg sex : female age : 29 city : koeln state : germany --- very simple but very special small coffee-tables that combine many advantages of corian. corian is used as tabletops and has a special molded *sidestick* invisibly joined onto the side which looks like it grows out of the table like bamboo. It is hollow inside and contains an energy saving lightbulb (mounted from underneath) that makes the corian glow and serves as table-light, and a flower vase in the upper end (with exchangeable watercontainer). the sidestick is mounted on the side of the table so it doesn't limitate the user's space. the opposite side of the tabletop contains a glowing *service button*. when activated, a corona of red led lights comes up on the sidestick, like the stewardess-light in an airplane. the waiters and waitresses have a perfect overview on where service is asked. the service button graphics are milled into the tabletop from the underside of the table (different height layers for different colors), and is lit from behind, it works with a heat/ or motionsensor. the whole corian surface is smooth and easy to clean and appears to be one seemless piece with surprising hidden functions. we propose the 12,3mm white or cream coloured corian sheet as tabletop (size: 760x610mm so that 6 tabletops fit into one 760x3680mm corian sheet. base should be metal for stability.  ---  back to the competition results index ---  ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? -------  |
