the nordic society for invention and design and finnish brand iittala have unknowingly reinvented the ‘knuckle puck’ with ‘aalto puck’. drawing reference from finnish architect and designer alvar aalto’s iconic 1937 vase, the R&D piece is conceived using the same material as a regular hockey puck and behaves in the same way on ice with one fundamental difference; it doesn’t bounce as a regular puck. it can however, depending on how it’s hit, speed off in different random directions.

developed as part of a research project, you can sign up for an ‘aalto puck’ here for free.

‘since the middle ages ice hockey has been played with round pucks,’ expains NSID. ‘so this is why we are proud to present the first non-round hockey puck – [it is] inspired by the free forms of the finnish architect and designer alvar aalto and a small reminder that not everything has to be as we’re used to.’
