the ‘alhambra’ is an imposing fortress in the heart of andalucia, spain. within lie an alluring succession of halls and courtyards, stone and shafts of light, architectural arabesques and slender arcades, painted in strong contrasts. round about, the heady scent of jasmine blossom wafts up from the generalife gardens. beyond, the peaks of the sierra nevada, always snow-capped, glint in the sunlight. ‘moresque’, the collection of pendants and table lamps by alessandro zambelli for seletti, captures the moorish details of the palace complex.

clear lines and compact volumes are the main ideas behind this lighting fixture set. as if tattooed, the white porcelain surfaces flaunt an array of bold colors and more subtle filigree polychrome. the slender ribs of european art alternate with the vibrant bands in a vigorous succession of stylized vectors. the tones are pastel: orange burnt, pale turquoise, indigo, pistachio green and slate grey.

each product is available in two versions. the pendant model comes with a ceiling rose in intricate decor, size 19 cm by 7.6 cm. the reading lamp, in comparison, measures 20 cm by 10 cm. four-watt LED light bulbs fit the entire collection. ‘moresque captures old-world charm and bygone features and gives them a contemporary spin,’ says zambelli. the result strikes a new balance, in a composition of diverse stylistic elements co-existing in harmony. he continues by saying, ‘past and present set aside their irreconcilable conflict and allow themselves to be transformed. enlightened with synergetic strength, they highlight each other’s mix of contrasting features in a design project which becomes a sign of the times.’
