french design duo amaury poudray and rémi bouhaniche of usin-e presents their project ‘prelude’, a furniture collection made from flexible rattan mats and thin steel rods for the gallery, brussels. instead of being woven around a structure, the rattan mats are tucked into the frames to create new ambiguous surfaces and spaces.

‘what we aim at is creating a link between things apparently in contrast: persons, techniques, materials. creating paradoxes, tension and lightness, emptiness and fragility, like the world around us.’ – amaury poudray and rémi bouhaniche of usin-e

the rattan weaving is the work of the ‘vannerie’ sector of e.s.a.t. gallieni in villeurbanne in france, which, since 1911, has offered visually-impaired workers the opportunity to have a profession in support of their autonomy and social integration. the ‘prelude’ collection consists of 7 items – 4 furniture objects, produced in a numbered and limited edition of 20 pieces, and 3 large baskets. they were presented at the ‘youngdesignersfair’, interieur 2010 design biennale in kortrijk, belgium.
