atelier teratoma is a madrid-based architecture and design studio founded in 2014 by victor nouman and eugenio fernandez that looks for new fields of work in which to develop their interests. their latest project ‘technopicnic’ begins with a reflection on picnics, understanding them as a displacement of a group of people to an open place in order to share a meal. they also found convenient to make a more complex definition in order to determinate which are the agents that take place in this activity and what are the relationships between them to manifest a manifesto for the contemporary nomad.

the project begins by researching the history of picnics and thinking what’s the meaning of this activity today. traditionally, it was associated with the search of natural environments to share a meal. but what happens when this is brought into a context defined by hard pavements, congestion and new ways of communication? for these new type of settings, atelier teratoma proposes a collection of prototypes that try to rethink the idea of making a picnic in the urban context in the epicenter of the city: the square.

‘technopicnic’ works as a backpack that integrates several technologies such as a solar panel to make it self-sufficient, speakers to improvise a party anywhere, a screen to receive messages via bluetooth in order to be in contact with other users, lights to generate editable experiences, and USB hubs to charge your mobile phone at any time. once the user chooses the perfect setting, it is transformed into a table that can make any picnic an incredible and complex experience.
