since 1999, italian furniture brand B-LINE has been reissuing classic designs of the 60s and 70s–conceived by the likes of joe colombo, rodolfo bonetto and kazuhide takahama–with the aim of restoring the creative heritage, simplicity and aesthetic splendour of the selected pieces; reproduced in flexible materials such as plastic, steel, fabric and wood.

among the notable products isboby‘, a trolley storage unit created by colombo in 1970. the versatile injection moulded, ABS plastic unit that comes on polypropylene casters offers users a range of compartments–integrated swivel trays, to drawers and open shelf receptacles–for keeping their belongings. ‘boby’ comes in a standard dimension of 43 x 42 cm wide, that is available in three heights of 52.5 cm, 74 cm and 94.5 cm, making the mobile furniture adaptable to a variety of situations–from the office to the art studio to the kitchen. the historic design piece can be purchased in black, orange, red, tornado grey and white, and is part of the museum of modern art in new york and triennale in milan’s permanent collections.

the same year that ‘boby’ was made, colombo designed ‘multichair’. the transformable seating unit is made from a simple composition of two cushion elements that allow users to easily convert it from an armchair to a lounge chair via a steel hinge.

alongside the work of colombo are the furniture pieces of rodolfo bonetto. the italian designer’s ‘4/4’ is a modular design that double functions as a coffee table and book case. special inserts allow the user to arrange and fasten the four identical injection-moulded ABS plastic components in stacked or one-level configurations, depending on their needs.

the 1968 design of bonetto’s ‘boomerang’ armchair is an upholstered steel frame structure whose lateral profile is informed by its name. by joining them together, one can form a longer sofa, creating a larger social space. a flat pocket can be found on its back for storing magazines and newspapers.
