one of the philippines’ most successful design consultants, ito kish has launched his most recent series at maison et objet 2013 in paris. influenced by the near omnipresence of balusters in vintage philippine design – from seating and storage, to ventanillas that allow air to flow in and out of the homes filipinos grew up in, to decorative details in staircases – the ‘baluster’ collection incorporates traditional asian craft techniques to create modern interpretations of everyday furniture for the home. ‘my design will always be about who i am and where I come from,’ comments ito kish. the pieces highlight elaborate woodworking details, which are seen evident in the extensive range of tables, bookshelves, candle holders and chairs.
