the ‘bluemasters, innovation in denim’ is a book that tells the story of both the past and future of denim, through its production and the voices of those responsible for its evolution. written by fabiana giacomotti, head of fashion and costume studies at rome’s sapienza university and published by the menabò group, the volume follows the vision of iskotm and archroma to expose this cultural trend. the pages reveal how jeans have become one of the most iconic, sought-after garments on the planet, and show the men and women responsible for developing denim to its production and manufacturing, creativity, retailing and communications.

the book’s two hundred large-format pages are divided into two parts, with the first part a series of interviews profiling the ‘bluemasters’, presented in alphabetical order and photographed at work in their office, at the work bench, in the laundry or in the factory.

the second part follows the more technical evolution of denim production, with a focus on eco-friendly cotton growing and processes such as dyeing, washing and finishing. the book begins with how jeans are made: from raw cotton to the catwalk and progresses onto sustainability and innovative technologies for plantation, followed by spinning, dyeing, weaving and finishing and the resulting technical and creative revolutions.

the book concludes with a reflection on the future relationship between denim and fashion, as fabiana giacomotti says: ‘the world of high fashion must establish a good working relationship with a garment that, aside from its technical excellence, possesses all the right characteristics to provide new opportunities for renewal.’
