furniture for mass production inevitably tends to become of an average specification in order that it can respond to various scenarios. subsequently, a space becomes somewhat unremarkable when it is filled with such ordinary types of objects. nendo proposes a new relationship between space and furniture with the ‘border table’.

presented in a solo show at the eye of gyre gallery in omotesando, tokyo, the design has been conceived as a direct result of the specific exhibition space. the japanese creative walked through the gallery and became stimulated by the elements of an interior that are normally considered troublesome when it comes to furniture; such as the corners of a room, or protruding columns for example. during this process, nendo verified how furniture becomes balanced as it is placed within the gallery, and subsequently how the proportions themselves are derived. the result is a series of unusual tables that are defined by a 5mm square metal rod which is bent in a way that highlights the architectural lines of the space, with a small table top with a radius of 100mm attached to it. the design utilizes the element of space as a part of its structure by pushing itself into the corners or edges of the gallery’s walls, the side of the floor and exhibition stands.
