london-based, bulgarian-born home wear designer velichko velikov created ‘lastika’ in the italian lagostudio workshop. the circular shape of the steel tubular frame, in combination with the 40 vibrant elastic bands that comprise the seat of the chair, has a flower-like resemblance. the color scheme of the elastic belts are reminiscent of the traditional shades of bulgarian tapestry work. ‘lastika’s lightweight design is highly portable while also upholding structural integrity as an entirely stable piece.

the piece was featured at budapest design week 2011  in the program series ‘design hét couleur locale: európa snínei tárgyakban’: the colours of europe in objects design exhibition’ within the bulgarian cluster. three contemporary projects from thirty countries of the european union were featured in the exhibit as the cultural and artistic characteristics of each nation were appreciated in each display. the pieces were selected based upon the guidance of that nation’s design experts by assessing the artists’ ability to convey the local color, tone and aesthetic of their respective homes.
