rotterdam-based industrial designer patrick hartog prioritzes the handmade in his products. the ‘cable light’ draws from the knot-tying techniques on mooring bollards and the craft of ceramics and slip casting. multi-colored or patterned cables enliven the simple, cast form while making the fixture highly customizable. white earthenware is topped by a metal ring that links the interchangeable cable to the light shade. the original shape is first made out of plaster on a lathe and serves as the mother mold for the liquid clay. the method ensures that identicallights could be created. small lights are currently in production and measure 12 cm in diameter and 15 cm in height. a design for larger dimensions is underway.
