crowdyhouse: an innovative crowdfunding platform for independent designers

mark studholme and suzan claesen have found a way to bridge the gap between start-ups and product distribution through an innovative crowdfunding platform known as ‘crowdyhouse’. many up-and-coming designers have discovered that without capital and proper financing for projects, it would be nearly impossible to manufacture a collection. designers have no capital to start their own production lines,’ explains studholme and claesen. ‘even if they did, how would they sell their products? this is how designers often end up at a label which takes over the production, design and marketing of your products. but what does a designer get in return?’

based on a similar system to kickstarter, ‘crowdyhouse’ simplifies the entire crowdsourcing life-cycle. rather than offering several rewards at different price points, the platform only offers the final production piece as if you’re buying the item in advance. ‘we decided to set up a platform based on the principles of crowd funding, tailored specifically for design. we wanted to do a couple of things differently,’ they add. instead of meeting a certain financial goal, the process uses ‘minimums’ that need to be reached, before the design can be taken into production. ‘a designer no longer has to take into account store margins, this win-win situation is something we find very enjoyable.’
