quasar is an avant-garde dutch company that has been launching exclusive, creative, and inventive designs since 1992. with this intent to keep pushing forward, the lighting manufacturer has contacted the berlin-based studio of daniel becker for a new approach. the collaboration has resulted in ‘the elaine series’, a collection of lamps based on the model satellite developed in the early 1960s.

early on in the design process, the spherical pendant lamp consisted of about 150 single tea-lights with built-in miniature LED bulbs. taking note of the scientific device’s parabolic form, the diffusers were replaced by facetted and polished metal surfaces. by combining each of them into a single composition, they have ended up enhancing the luminosity through their folded and reflective qualities. the exterior shell they create is connected to a hidden, minimal frame of stainless steel profiles, which also serve as conductors for the electricity.
