in a recent interview by digifest, bill buxton was asked to reflect on his career and receiving this award:

it makes getting old a little bit better because the reality is, is that, almost nothing happens in less than 20 years. we started working on multi-touch in 1984, we published a paper on capacity multi-touch in 1985, and it wasn’t until 2007 that things like the microsoft surface and the iPhone brought it out publicly. it takes a long time. but that’s true with everything, the mouse took 30 years. so, it’s a really good feeling.

you also have to assume that in many cases you’re not going to get credit. and that’s fine. and that’s always compensated for because you get credit for things you didn’t do. and you have to be honest about that too.

it’s amazing what a group of people can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.

if you purpose is to promote change as oppose to promoting yourself it’s much easier. the sense of self-recognition, if it doesn’t happen on it’s own, just let it go. it’s less important. or else just go and become the kardashians.

but, let’s be very clear, great design is like plumbing, if you notice it, it’s probably wrong or broken. prepare for obscurity if you do great work, and anything that comes your way be grateful and be humble because you didn’t do it on your own anyhow.’

bill buxton will be receiving his digital pioneer award, on thursday, april 28, 2016 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm with a reception to follow at corus entertainment.
