miami based designer joão magalhães, with zuheir kotob, emphasizes the dangers of texting and driving in the ‘drop your weapon’ public service campaign. created in collaboration with AT&T, the two part series depicts weaponry made entirely of cell phones. the data magalhães visualizes is sourced from two places, the U.S. department of defense, and the centers for disease control — the latter of which gathers information regarding texting and driving related deaths. since america’s invasion of iraq in 2003, 4,491 service members have lost their lives. that number, large in its own right, pales in comparison to the CDC’s reports, which state that 3,000 people have died each year between ’03 and ’14 due to texting behind the wheel; roughly one casualty every 2.6 hours.
