duffy london models abyss horizon table after a dramatic cross-section of the sea

duffy london has expanded its visually arresting collection of ocean-inspired pieces to include a new object — the ‘abyss horizon’ table. echoing the deep and dramatic layers of the sea, the circular design creates a geological cross-section of a vivid blue-hued, subaquatic setting.

‘I was looking into sheets of thick glass at my glass manufacturer’s factory, and noticed how the material darkened as they added more layers – the same way the sea does as it deepens,’ describes designer christopher duffy. ‘I wanted to use this effect to replicate a real piece of the earth’s sea bed. like a mythical power had lifted a perfect rectangle straight from the earth’s crust to use as his personal ornament.’

created in a limited edition of 25, the duffy london-designed ‘abyss horizon’ table is hand made to order in the UK capital from sustainable materials. the team spent a year in the studio designing and developing the unique characteristics of the object, experimenting with materials like sculpted glass, plexiglass and wood until they most closely re-created the mesmeric abyss that had first captured duffy’s imagination. arranged like a 3D representation of a geological map, sinuous layers of colored glass are carefully arranged atop each other in an undulating formation, creating a seemingly vast and deep chasm on which users can rest a cup of coffee or tea. 

‘abyss horizon’ table will be presented by sarah myerscough gallery at: PAD london, the salon, art + design in new york, and art basel, miami beach.
