duncan shotton has designed a set of mind-bending dipping dishes called ‘soy shape’ that give the illusion of three-dimensional geometries once filled. in using the natural color gradation that occurs in soy sauce at shallow depths on an irregular inner surface, the trays turn from planar plates into seemingly sculptural, impossible triangles and cubes.

made in japan by craftsmen and craftswomen of gifu prefecture, the dishes are available in two packaging styles: the standard box — holding two matching dishes packed in bubble wrap within a simple cardboard case; or 1 of 77 limited-edition, hand-signed and serial numbered ‘slide-box’ packages — containing two matching dishes in a 5-layer, stacked cardboard presentation tray with matt-card sleeve, cut and assembled by hand at shotton‘s studio in tokyo. currently seeking funding on kickstarter, the ‘soy shape’ dipping dishes take your sushi eating experience and food presentation to the next dimension.
