sewing is a technique that is typically associated with binding soft materials, however färg & blanche have employed related technologies to produce ‘wood tailoring’, a series that explores the possibility of needlework as a means of joining  furniture parts.

presented at the 2014 stockholm furniture & light fair, the collection of seating and storing pieces are created using a sewing machine to fasten layer upon layer of plywood forming the collection of works that include the ‘wood layer armchair’, ‘bespoke chair’, ‘dark layer cupboard’ and ‘pocket cupboard’, expressing the potential of needlework in the production of furniture — outside of upholstering. the ‘wood tailoring series has been made specially for ‘longing to fly, longing to fly’, an art film by architect erika janunger and choreographer / dancer oskar frisk which is also debuting on this occasion.

the backrest of the ‘wood layer armchair’ visually presents a topographical map that mimics the organic growth pattern of the lumber from which it is made; also mirrored on the upholstered cushioning of its front.

the ‘dark layer cupboard’ is a storage unit that is formed by stratum upon stratum of rigid material, arranged to look like growth rings found in the cross section of a tree trunk. hand made in the studio, the cabinet comes in a limited edition.

six different parts are joined together to form a tailored back — similar to a well-designed suit jacket — of the ‘bespoke chair’, which accommodates the body comfortably. the seat can be supported from a variety of metal leg options.

the ‘pocket cupboard’ is a modular storage system that features tailored doors that have external leather pockets for storing magazines or books. each one is stitched directly onto the wood framework.
