what is the role of architecture in design? what can building codes and ornamentation typically reserved for buildings bring to the objects conceived for domestic spaces? ‘domestiquer’, a series of works by french designer frédéric saulou, spawns directly from such questions. while wandering the streets of rennes, saulou developed a deep interest in façades donned with slate and ornamental stone. contemplating the post-industrial heritage of the local minerals/materials, he sought to challenge typical associations and alter its dynamic between architecture, art, and design. ‘domestiquer’ is the first result of ongoing partnerships and collaborative research into the timeless french regional elements, and their potential roles in contemporary works.
