new york’s friedman benda gallery returns to design miami/ this year with ‘crosscurrents’, an exhibition of new work by seven international designers. spanning five continents and three generations, the selected works embody the diversity of backgrounds and principles within the group, while simultaneously highlighting the scope of each individual designer’s practice. every piece presented forms a part of a larger body of work, referring to a situation that is both active and expanding. ‘together these fresh works and their makers are integral to the gallery’s roster and signify its newly expanded and ongoing mission,’ jennifer olshin, partner at friedman benda says.

now in his 6th decade of working, american designer wendell castle presents two new works for friedman benda. the pieces include a unique organic and volumetric settee in ebonized ash and a set of limited edition bronze stools. coinciding with a recently opened exhibition at new york’s museum of arts and design titled ‘remastered’, the presented pieces by castle are realized through his latest practice of combining hand craftsmanship — like carving, rasping and finishing — with digital technologies — like 3D scanning, 3D modeling and computer-controlled milling.
