the barcelona-based studios of goula figuera and factil have constructed ‘loop’, a contemporary sideboard made from solid oak. the two steel tubes U-shaped have a double function: as legs and as a structural element, which avoids the need to close the furniture on the sides. this allows the user to access the content in an easier manner. but, the defining characteristic is the way in which the shutters are opened. the designers state, ‘one of our obsessions when we designing the sideboard was to avoid traditional handles, which would interrupt the continuity of the shape. we avoided it by letting the last slat of each shutter free, so they would act as the handles. so, when ‘loop’ is closed, you have to guess where it opens.’
