IKEA is set to launch a flat-pack bicycle, primarily designed for city riding. the unisex product, named ‘sladda’, was developed after designers spent three days following urban cyclists to understand everyday transportation needs in a city. the end result, IKEA says, is a bicycle that’s not only comfortable and low-maintenance, but that can also be adapted to a variety of different needs.

IKEA’s first bike design has a rust and oil-free belt drive, automatic gears, and a plug-in system for a range of accessories — including front and back racks and a bag that can be transformed into a backpack. a trailer can be attached to offer additional transportation space, while helmets, a U-lock, and a pump have also been designed.

with more and more people living in urban places, there’s an increased need for easy and flexible transportation,’ says IKEA. ‘having a car in a city is often not a practical solution. the sladda bicycle, trailer and accessories, make it possible to move heavy things across the city, for a truly sustainable and healthy way of life. just attach the trailer to the integrated connection point, and you have a solution that replaces the need for a car.’

the design features a lightweight aluminum frame, an automatic two-gear system, and a kick-stand that keeps the bike in an upright position. from a maintenance standpoint, the bike’s rust-proof frame — which comes with a 25-year limited warranty — is coated with two layers of lacquer that makes it extra resistant to scratching, road salts, and mud. meanwhile, the gear system is powered by a belt drive that requires no oiling whatsoever.

what’s really unique about sladda, is that it can be customized with accessories according to the need of the week or day,’ continues IKEA. ‘for example, when it’s shopping time, a front rack can be attached to provide extra space for bags and purchases. a sladda bicycle U-lock is also available to keep this nice-looking bike safe when shopping takes a little longer than expected.’
