IUW flotation device by julia grochal incorporates lifejacket features

‘IUW’ is a flotation device by polish product designer julia grochal which has been specifically designed for water sports. the product combines the features of a sport lifejacket and a throwable device and meets the safety regulations set by the SOLAS convention – the international maritime treaty for the safety of life at sea. the aim of the design was to create an invention which would encourage more people to approach water based activities in a safe manner.

julia grochal’s design not only functions as a flotation device, but also aids the process of pulling the user out of water onshore, or aboard a boat. the outer layer of the product is made of nylon coated neoprene which offers excellent thermal insulation properties and high resistance to abrasion, water or UV rays. the selected colour scheme divides the form into two parts: the base element is produced in neon green, and the buoyant section in a shade of grey. these colours not only increase the visibility of the whole form, but also highlight the parts which the individual can use to perform specific actions.

polyurethane foam of low density has been used as a buoyant filler which allows the shape to fit the form of the human body. despite its small size, the device provides sufficient buoyancy to keep the user on the water’s surface whilst allowing for movement between the arms, neck and torso.
