jaemin choi's calligraphy set borrows its shape from a korean garden

designer jaemin choi has created a traditional calligraphy set influenced by the various sights and architectural fixtures of a korean garden: pond, mountain ridge, roof tile and and the ripples of water. each aspect of the garden is thoughtfully interpreted into a tool or utensil intended to support the art of korean calligraphy or ‘seoye’.

‘in the fast digital world, we need time to look back on ourselves’, says jaemin choi, whose set evokes a slower way of life. the kit, entitled ‘MBSW’, consists of an ink stone, paper roll holder, brush tray, brush holder, accessory dish, card holder and paperweight. using a combination of materialities, choi’s MBSW is reflective of the shapes and forms of both the natural world and built environment, and promotes a thoughtful, considered approach to the traditional craft that hopes to act as an antidote to the stresses of our time.

another project that encourages the meditative act of calligraphy is SHU SHU’s ‘shin’ pencil sharpener, a whetstone style sharpener that aims to transform the mundane practice into a contemplative act. read more about that project here
