salone del mobile 2017: emeco have collaborated once again with jasper morrison to unveil a new collection: ‘1 inch’. a collection of chairs, stools and tables that blends emeco’s signature, long-lasting recycled aluminum material and morrison’s application in design.

with ‘1 inch’, the frame of each chair is handcrafted using emeco’s time-tested material and 77-step process; a technique that has been used to make the original 1006 navy chair since 1944. as hinted in the name, jasper morrison developed the frame that uses only a one inch size, square extruded aluminum tube for the strength-to-weight ratio coupled with the least amount of material to yield the maximum amount of strength.

the timeless design continues with emeco’s identity of using reclaimed, recycled and eco-minded materials to make long-lasting products. the frames of ‘1 inch’ are made of recycled aluminum. meanwhile the seats and backs are available in various materials to suit a variety of materials and colors.

during development, emeco craftsmen repeatedly pushed the material to its limits to accomplish the frame shape jasper morrison envisioned.

‘I’m more and more interested in working towards designs which take part in everyday life as naturally as possible.’ comments morrison ‘the 1” chair, though far from spectacular, is intended to be an updated emeco solution to a wide variety of situations where something strong and less ashy is required. the design of the chair seemed basic enough and we were not expecting much trouble in developing it, but we underestimated the complication of bending square aluminum tube in more than one plain simultaneously.’
