l: konstantin grcic r: mayday, 1998 portable lamp for flos
was born in munich, germany in 1965.
after training as a cabinet maker at parnham college in england he studied design
at the royal college of art in london from 1988-90. in 1990 he has worked in the studio
of jasper morrison and in 1991 he was setting up his own design practice in munich.
many of his products have received prestigious design awards, the mayday-lamp
produced by flos was selected into the permanent collection of the museum of modern
art in new york. in 1999 he won the competetion to furnish a public square in london's
canary wharf. in october 2000 konstantin grcic is nominated 'guest of honour' at the
interieur biennial in kortrijk/ belgium presenting an extensive show of his work.

db: do you think that design is an autonomous cultural expression?
do you think it's a form of art?
i think of design as a cultural expression.
it is an autonomous discipline...but not like a cultural expression.
it is closely linked to communication and other fields of art.
i don’t like the idea of design being defined “art”. as a source of inspiration,
art is very important for me ... so is the cinema and music.
