the ‘lid collection’ by nendo is a series of bud vases and small containers whose forms have been derived from enlarging the lid of a traditional japanese lacquerware soup bowl. nendo played with the object’s familiar scale, changing the relationship between its parts by putting emphasis on the moment in which someone removes the lid from the bowl; progressively narrowed down, and elongated. the simple vessels have been produced by urushi kobo oshima, a respected lacquer workshop founded in 1909, using yamanaka lacquer techniques, and are available exclusively at seibu department stores in japan.
