a collection of work -curated by noriko kawakami- interprets the biennale’s theme ‘utopia in design’ to ‘another place that isn’t here.’ yasuhiro suzuki translates and suggests that it means for people to take a journey in a world that exists as an object beneath our feet and an image in our heads.

‘I see design as something that shows people living in the current age how to move forward like a compass that is continually renewed in each time and place.’

the japan foundation‘s participation will feature a spatial structure comprised of different sized objects, drawings and animation. in turn, this will highlight the division between inside and outside, before and after, past and present. the work focuses on the importance of shifting focus from everyday life and considering the wider world; to examine, imagine, and consider what lies between familiar and unfamiliar societies and raises questions about everyday life and our way of perceiving the world.
