through an unconventional use of seaweed as a main material for a domestic environment, the ‘marine light’ by tel-aviv-based designer nir meiri plays on the tension between the artistic and the commercial. originally utilized by ancient cultures for different uses, seaweed today is cultivated and harvested on a commercial scale as a result of a growing interest driven by environmental concerns. the lamp combines a metal base and thin metal structural strings for the shade. the organic material is applied on the metal strings while still fresh – later drying and shrinking to obtain the form of the cover. ‘marine light’ will be presented at spazio rossana orlandi during salone del mobile 2013.
